Dare I say this started it all? The desire, obsession, life-long quest for killer jeans. In fact, you didn’t even have to be alive for this ad to have an impact on your life.
We all have stories about our favorite pair of jeans; the first, the most memorable, or the the go-to pair in our closets right now. Fashion blog Chic Galleria is asking readers to submit their denim stories for a chance to win a pair from Talbots new Premium Denim Collection, plus a gift card. Three winners will be chosen, who will then be featured in a viewer’s choice contest, right here on RCC. Check out the entries. Or better yet… be one!

So the story goes… Ernest Hemingway gets together with a bunch of buddies and one of them puts forth a challenge. [Yes, they were in a bar.] The challenge? To write a complete story using only six words. Hemingway’s response? “For sale: baby shoes, never worn.” Supposedly, he considered it a personal best.
Flash forward to 2006, when Larry Smith and friends launched the Six Word Memoir Project on SMITHmag.net, now an international craze and a couple of New York Times best-selling books… the kind of books you would be happy to receive as a gift.
Why am I telling you all of this? Well, I may or may not have a birthday coming up. I also happen to be a word freak and am obsessed with this website. Ok. There is one more reason. But for that you will have to wait until tomorrow…

Hardly inspired by any of this year’s “summer reads”, I found myself drawn to a classic. To many, THE classic… To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee. Sure to have read it as required reading at some point in my life, I barely remembered it. Now, 5 days and 323 pages later, I can’t get it off my mind. The story is nuanced and sweet and disheartening and, somehow, hopeful. Beyond all this is the story of the story. Mockingbird was Harper Lee’s first novel, and she never wrote another. She has not granted an interview since 1964. Some say the incredible success of the book [over 30 million copies sold, a Pulitzer Prize and an Oscar winning movie adaptation] was overwhelming. Some say she knew she couldn’t top what she had done. And some say she only had one book in her. If this is the case, clearly one is enough.
If you haven’t read To Kill a Mockingbird, lately or ever, pick it up. Even Oprah says to. In the mean time, what have you been reading this summer?
